My Fiancé Wanted Us to Move to Alaska for Two Years to Save Money — But What He Did on Moving Day Changed Everything

Posted on June 29, 2025 By edm.

When Jake suggested we relocate to Alaska to save money and finally start building our future together, I agreed without hesitation. After a last trip with my girlfriends to say goodbye, I returned home—and found something I never expected, something that completely shattered my world.

I’m Chloe, 25 years old, living in my mom’s old house in South Carolina and working as a freelance graphic designer. The house was cozy, full of memories, with its wrap-around porch and garden—things my mom loved before moving to Alaska five years ago.

Jake moved in with me two years into our relationship. At first, it felt like we were building a life together—movie nights, cooking dinners, dreaming about our future. Rent-free, too. But gradually, the weight of the household fell mostly on me.

Jake had quit his job eight months earlier, unable to handle his demanding boss, and since then, he relied on his savings and my income. Every time I asked about job hunting, he said, “I’m figuring things out—I want to find my passion.” Meanwhile, I covered groceries, bills, and nearly everything else.

He often told me, “You’re so good at handling things; I’m lucky to have you.” I told myself it was temporary—that love meant supporting each other through tough times.

One evening, as I cooked dinner and Jake scrolled through his phone, he surprised me by getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him. It wasn’t a perfect proposal, but it was heartfelt, and I said yes.

Weeks later, my mom came to visit from Alaska. During dinner, Jake confided in her his insecurities—that he felt like a failure because he couldn’t provide a proper engagement ring or plan a real wedding. My mom told him, “Being down on your luck doesn’t make you a failure. Staying down does.”

Mom then shared an idea—what if we moved to Alaska, where rent-free living with her and seasonal jobs could help us save enough money in two years for the life we dreamed of?

Jake seemed intrigued but cautious. The promise of saving $50,000 each was tempting. We set a move date, and I started planning excitedly, dreaming of our fresh start.

But two days before we were supposed to leave, I went out for a weekend getaway with friends, trusting Jake to manage things at home.

When I returned early, I found my packed boxes by the door—but no sign of Jake’s things. When I confronted him, he casually told me he wasn’t going to Alaska after all.

Confused and hurt, I soon met Maddie—a woman living in our home, wearing Jake’s shirt, introduced as his new girlfriend.

Jake claimed it was “win-win”: I could have my adventure, and he could stay behind to sort his life out with Maddie.

I walked out quietly, heading to the airport with a broken heart. That night, I told my mom what happened. Her anger and support reminded me I wasn’t alone.

I flew to Alaska, feeling a mix of heartbreak and relief.

With my mom’s encouragement, I found a job in fishing—hard work, but fulfilling. Soon, friends from back home stepped in to reclaim the house from Jake and Maddie, changing locks and putting the past behind me.

Months passed. I grew stronger, learned new skills, and found a community. Then I met Nate—hardworking, kind, and respectful.

We built a relationship based on partnership and mutual respect. Two years later, we bought a home together near the mountains.

Looking back at that moment on the couch when Jake said Alaska wasn’t for him, I realize he was right in one way—Alaska was exactly where I belonged.

It gave me the life I needed: work that challenged me, friends who supported me, and love that truly cared for me.

I’m grateful for everything, even the pain, because it led me to a better future.
