William walked out on his wife and daughter to chase a new life with a younger woman. But years down the line, when he least expected it, fate dealt him a harsh reality—and brought him face-to-face with the daughter he abandoned.
He had felt a flicker of guilt that night, watching the worry in Linda’s eyes. For a split second, he almost reconsidered. He knew the truth would break her.
They’d been married for two decades, raising their 17-year-old daughter in the cozy home Linda inherited. A year ago, they’d started a beef jerky business, but it failed quickly. William’s job became their only lifeline.
“So, what did you want to talk about, William?” Linda asked, breaking the silence.
“I’m… seeing someone else,” he confessed, eyes downcast. “I never wanted it to come to this, but… I couldn’t help it.”
“What are you saying?” Linda’s face went pale. “You have another woman? Tell me the truth!”
“I do,” he said quietly. “She’s young… different. We just… connected.”
Linda’s voice rose with fury. “Are you even hearing yourself? After twenty years, a daughter, everything we’ve built—”
She stopped mid-sentence as her phone buzzed. Composing herself, she answered, but moments later her expression changed. A call from the court revealed their home was being repossessed. William had taken out a loan against the house for their business—and hadn’t paid a dime back.
“You were supposed to make the payments!” she cried. “Are you seriously going to leave us homeless while you play house with your mistress?”
“They want $80,000! Where do you think I’m going to find that?” she screamed.
“I… I couldn’t save enough,” William stammered, fully aware the fault was his. But Linda had reached her limit.
“Get out!” she shouted. “Get out of my house!”
Years passed. At a red light, the sound of car horns pulled William from his thoughts. It had been six years since he’d abandoned his family—and the life he ran to hadn’t turned out as planned. He lost his job, his new partner left, and he spiraled into drinking.
Now, trying to rebuild, he headed into a job interview at a beef jerky plant. Ironically, the same business he once helped launch—and sink.
He hoped his failed experience might still count for something. When his number was called, he entered the room with shaky confidence.
To his surprise, he was hired—as a packaging operator.
And that was just the beginning…
