At just 12 years old, he trained hard and worked toward his goal. He also longed for a pair of spiked football shoes.
Often, while riding the school bus and sitting by the window, David would imagine winning a big game and giving a heartfelt speech thanking his mom. Quietly, he would say, “That would be an amazing speech.”
For months, David saved money to buy new shoes. He loved those shoes and worked diligently—selling lemonade from a stand he built and helping neighbors with chores—so he wouldn’t burden his mom, who was raising him and his twin sisters alone.
One day, he visited the shoe store and told the owner, Mr. Manning, about his savings. With a warm smile, Mr. Manning promised, “Your shoes will be waiting for you.”
On the bus one morning, a boy named Guillermo asked to sit next to David. David agreed happily.
Guillermo admired David and wished to be popular like him. That day, Guillermo complimented David’s shoes, but David admitted they were old and that he was saving for a new pair.
Guillermo felt embarrassed and tucked his feet under the seat. The truth was his own shoes were worn-out and tattered.
Over the next few days, David and Guillermo became close friends. One day, David excitedly told Guillermo, “I finally did it. My piggy bank is full. I’m getting my dream shoes today.”
Guillermo was happy for him. But as they talked, the bus hit a bump and one of Guillermo’s shoes fell off. David noticed the sole was full of holes, the fabric falling apart, and there was no lace left. Feeling embarrassed and sorry, David realized how much Guillermo needed new shoes.
The next day, David invited Guillermo to come with him to the shoe store.
Inside, Mr. Manning praised David, saying, “You earned these shoes yourself. They’re ready and waiting.”
David surprised everyone by asking for the shoes in a smaller size. “I want them in Guillermo’s size,” he said.
Guillermo was shocked and tried to refuse, but David stopped him. “You’re my great friend. You call me your hero—let me get these for you.”
Mr. Manning admired David’s kindness and handed Guillermo a new pair of shoes.
The two friends left the store happily.
At home, David’s mom asked if he got his shoes. Quietly, David said, “Mom, I bought them for Guillermo.” He expected a scolding but instead received a warm hug. “You’re such a kind and thoughtful boy. I’m proud of you.”
As they spoke, a truck arrived at their house. It was Mr. Manning, who brought David, his sister, and Guillermo a big gift of shoes.
“I saw you working hard selling lemonade and delivering newspapers, and I know how much you wanted those football shoes. Your kindness inspired me to surprise you today.”
That day, David learned that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
