It’s heartbreaking to think about the cruelty some animals endure, and sadly, this was the case for a dog named Buddy. His face was set on fire, and he was strangled with an extension cord. Despite the horrific abuse, Buddy has been showing incredible progress in his recovery, thanks to the compassionate care of dedicated veterinarians.
In April 2021, Buddy was found by the Tunica Humane Society, where he was described as a joyful, loving dog with no history of aggression. Tragically, he had suffered severe burns, and an extension cord was found wrapped around his neck. A child later admitted to the abuse, but due to being under the age of 12, no legal action could be taken.
Buddy was immediately placed in the care of the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi, where he began receiving medical treatment from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “Buddy’s vital signs are stable, yet recovery from burns is slow and challenging,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, a veterinary surgeon. His care focused on his comfort, changing bandages, and addressing emerging issues.
Fortunately, Buddy didn’t lose his sight, despite the severe trauma. His eyelids did require surgery for correction, but his doctors were hopeful he would retain his vision. Throughout the recovery process, Buddy’s spirit remained strong. The Humane Society shared, “Buddy perseveres each day, showing success with his skin grafts. Although burns heal slowly, Buddy is thriving.”
Buddy’s journey captured the hearts of people worldwide. His remarkable resilience and unwavering positivity were evident as he healed. He gradually shed his bandages and was learning basic commands, becoming more lively with each passing day.
A key moment came on August 7, when Buddy’s bandages were removed without sedation for the first time since the attack. His eyes were open, and he could see clearly—this milestone brought immense joy to everyone involved in his care. “His eyes were open, and he was keenly aware,” the Humane Society noted, confirming that Buddy could still see.
His recovery wasn’t just physical—his personality also transformed. “Buddy’s demeanor has completely changed since regaining his sight. He’s energetic, playful, and full of life,” said Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society. A heartwarming video showed Buddy happily playing fetch, a symbol of his regained spirit.
Although Buddy is far from fully recovered, there’s hope for his future. His eyes and skin require ongoing care, including regular drops and protection from the sun. He won’t be able to spend much time outdoors without precautions, but he’s now thriving in a loving forever home.
