Homeless Man Walks Into Burger King and Asks an Employee, “What Can I Buy for 50 Cents?”

Kindness and generosity toward those who need it most are what truly keep the world turning. Especially in moments when many of us feel disappointed by humanity, meeting people like young Matthew Resendez helps restore our faith and reminds us that the world isn’t as broken as it sometimes seems.

While working his shift at a local Burger King located in an area where many unhoused individuals often gather, Matthew was approached by one such man who walked into the restaurant holding a small collection of coins. The man showed Matthew what he had and politely asked if there was any meal available for fifty cents, explaining that it was all the money he had.

He wasn’t begging or asking for sympathy. He was willing to pay for his food, even though he didn’t realize that the amount he had wasn’t enough to cover even the cheapest item on the menu.

Matthew couldn’t bring himself to turn the man away. He could see that the man was hungry, and instead of sending him off, he chose to do something kind and meaningful.

He ended up paying for the homeless man’s meal out of his own pocket, a gesture that was deeply moving. When Matthew returned home and told his mother about what had happened, she felt compelled to share the story with a few friends, never imagining it would spread far beyond that.

“Proud mom moment!

Matthew was working tonight when a homeless man came into the restaurant holding fifty cents and asked if there was anything on the menu he could afford.

Matthew asked him what he would choose if money weren’t an issue, and the man replied that anything would help ease his hunger…”

“So Matthew rang up a full, filling meal and paid for it himself using his own debit card.

He handed the man his receipt and invited him to sit down and relax. That could have been the end of the story, a simple but beautiful moment. But it turned out that a woman nearby had been watching my son carry out his act of kindness.

Not only did she contact the company to let them know what a compassionate employee they had, but she also left my son an incredibly generous tip!

I couldn’t be prouder to be his mom, and I can honestly say I’ve done something right in helping raise such a kind-hearted young man.”

Even at a young age, Matthew understands empathy and compassion. He truly believes that everyone is equal and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their social standing.
