Woman Discovers an Abandoned Foal and Brings Her Into the Kitchen

After Equine Rescue saved a pregnant mare who was scheduled to be euthanized, everyone looked forward to meeting her foal. No one imagined that the baby would arrive far earlier than expected.
“I spotted a baby out in the field,” said Cricket, the founder of the rescue, in a video shared with us. “She wasn’t supposed to be born for nearly another month, so I never expected to see a foal that day.”
The newborn filly, who would later be named Addie, was clearly struggling from the start. She had not yet nursed, and it soon became apparent that her mother was rejecting her.
“Within just a few hours, we realized that if she didn’t eat soon, she wasn’t going to survive,” Cricket explained. “All we could do was take things one day at a time.”
With Addie’s condition so fragile, Cricket made the decision to bring the tiny foal home from the rescue property and care for her around the clock. In the beginning, Addie was weak and barely able to move. She spent her days receiving bottle feedings every 30 minutes while slowly building up the strength she needed to survive. For the first few days, progress was minimal, but then something shifted.
“About three or four days in, we noticed a huge change,” Cricket said. “She started standing up on her own. It wasn’t us helping her anymore. Then she began to run, and we were all asking ourselves where this burst of energy came from. Even the veterinarian was amazed that she pulled through.”
As Addie continued to grow stronger, her personality and energy exploded. Cricket’s home was never designed to accommodate a baby horse, so adjustments had to be made quickly. The family even removed their kitchen island to create more open space for Addie to move around. Despite that effort, the curious foal still managed to get into everything she possibly could.
“Any sound I hear, I jump up to see what she’s gotten into or what she’s destroying,” Cricket said with a laugh.
Before long, Cricket began driving Addie back to the rescue facility every day so she could run freely and burn off her growing energy. Interestingly, Addie didn’t seem particularly interested in interacting with the other horses. Instead, she gravitated toward the family’s rescue dogs, choosing them as her preferred playmates.
“I honestly don’t think she realizes she’s a horse yet,” Cricket joked.
A few months after her rescue, Addie had fully recovered and was permanently moved back to the rescue farm. Though she was still learning how to behave like a horse, the transformation was remarkable. From a premature, fragile newborn fighting for survival, she had grown into a confident, energetic young filly who became stronger and braver with each passing day.
