Not every two days, not every four days: how often should you wash your hair, according to a dermatologist?

Experts say the ideal number of hair washes per week is between three and five, depending on your scalp and daily habits.
Keeping the scalp clean is essential for healthy, vibrant hair. Most specialists agree that washing your hair regularly — typically 3–5 times per week — helps prevent buildup, bad odors, and makes any hair treatments more effective.
Dermatologist Alex Docampo debunks a common myth: “People often believe that washing their hair too frequently damages it or that washing more causes the scalp to produce more oil, but that is completely incorrect.” He stresses that the key is adjusting the routine to your scalp’s needs.
Should you wash your hair 3–5 times per week?
This frequency helps remove excess oil and product residue, improves oxygenation of the follicles, and minimizes irritation. It also reduces odors and limits the growth of fungi and bacteria in warm, moist environments. However, each person’s ideal routine will vary based on exercise, climate, and lifestyle.
The Hair Surgical Institute notes: “How often you should wash your hair depends on several personal factors, such as hair type, your daily activities, scalp condition, product use, and how you style your hair.” In short, your washing schedule must fit your everyday life.
Risks of waiting too long between washes
Skipping washes for too long can cause sebum accumulation, itchiness, and flakes. Dermatologist María Marcos explains that “this is a very common issue caused by multiple factors, including frequent stress in people with oily skin.” Excess oil and inflammation can also trigger temporary hair shedding.
To maintain a healthy scalp, experts recommend:
choosing a balancing or sulfate-free shampoo (especially for sensitive scalps)
applying conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends
using a nourishing hair mask once a week
Among recommended products are Apivita’s Royal Jelly Elixir for shine and density, and Farma Dorsch’s Root Cover to conceal roots and grays.
Small habits also make a big difference: avoid washing with very hot water, massage gently with your fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and never go to bed with wet hair.
Simple rule of thumb
If you want an easy guideline, sticking to three to five washes per week is generally the most balanced and scalp-friendly approach for most people.
