According to documents obtained by the New York Post, New York Attorney General Letitia James is reportedly allowing several relatives with criminal histories to live in properties she owns in Virginia.
The revelation surfaces as James faces federal scrutiny connected to those same properties. Among the relatives allegedly residing there is her 21-year-old grand-niece, Cayla Thompson-Hairston, who is also dealing with her own legal troubles.
Court filings show that Thompson-Hairston was charged in April 2024 for allegedly providing false information about her prior felony record while attempting to purchase a firearm in Suffolk, Virginia, according to The Post. The charge stems from claims that she falsified federal paperwork during the purchase attempt. She had previously been prohibited from owning a gun due to an earlier felony charge of malicious wounding filed in August 2020.
Under Virginia law, malicious wounding involves intentionally shooting, stabbing, cutting, or otherwise inflicting bodily harm on another person with the intent to maim, disable, disfigure, or kill. It is classified as one of the state’s most serious violent offenses.
At the time of that charge, Thompson-Hairston was a juvenile, meaning those court records remain sealed under laws protecting minors.
Prosecutors later dropped the firearm-related charges after determining that her prior malicious wounding case had been reduced to a misdemeanor through a plea deal. Because of that change, she was no longer legally restricted from owning a firearm.
In addition to her legal history, Thompson-Hairston maintains an active presence on OnlyFans and other social media platforms, where she frequently posts explicit material. Her online profiles feature sexual content, images of her posing with cash and her boyfriend, as well as pregnancy announcements and related videos.
The openness of her social media activity stands in sharp contrast to the sealed nature of her juvenile court records.
According to The Post, Cayla Thompson-Hairston first became involved in criminal activity in 2019, at the age of 15, alongside her older sister, 36-year-old Nakia Thompson. Documents reviewed by the outlet reveal that Nakia has a lengthy arrest history and currently has multiple active warrants in North Carolina. Her fugitive status suggests she is actively evading law enforcement.
Both sisters are reportedly residing in homes owned by New York Attorney General Letitia James in Norfolk, Virginia. These properties are now part of a federal criminal investigation centered on mortgage documents bearing James’s signature. Prosecutors are investigating whether she made false statements or misrepresentations on the loan applications connected to those properties.
James is facing potential penalties of up to 60 years in prison on federal charges of bank fraud and making false statements. Prosecutors allege that she provided inaccurate information on the mortgage application for the residence currently occupied by Nakia Thompson.
Court filings state that James purchased the property in 2020 for $137,000, claiming it as a “second home” she intended to use primarily for herself. However, investigators allege that she instead moved her niece into the house and began collecting rent shortly after the purchase, contradicting the declaration she made to the lender.
According to prosecutors, this misrepresentation enabled James to qualify for a lower mortgage rate, providing her with an estimated $19,000 in financial benefit. The difference between a second home and an investment property can significantly impact both interest rates and loan conditions.
James has denied any wrongdoing. Nakia Thompson, however, reportedly testified before a federal grand jury that she lived in the house rent-free. Prosecutors also claim that James listed her father as her husband on mortgage paperwork in order to secure a more favorable loan rate.
