To make it believable, I told him I’d be out of town on his birthday and that we could celebrate later. The night before, I pretended to pack my bags and head to the airport, but instead, I stayed overnight at my friend Karen’s house so I could prepare everything for the next day.
“Are you sure he won’t suspect anything?” Karen asked as I tossed a few clothes into a suitcase.
I grinned. “Not a clue. He thinks I’m visiting my sister.”
Karen laughed. “You’re sneaky, Maria.”
The next morning, I woke up early, excited to get started. Since Tom usually came home around six, I invited his friends and family to arrive at five so we’d have time to decorate. By a quarter to five, people began showing up, starting with Tom’s brother, Jim.

“You’ve really gone all out, Maria!” she said, smiling.
“Thanks! Can you help inflate these balloons?” I asked, passing her a bag that matched the party’s blue and gold theme.
By five-thirty, the place looked perfect. Streamers hung from the ceiling, balloons filled every corner, and a big banner reading Happy 40th, Tom! stretched across the wall. At five forty-five, I gathered everyone in the kitchen.
“Alright, he’ll be home any minute. Lights off, everyone hide!”
We crouched behind the furniture, whispering and giggling in the dark. My heart raced as I heard the front door open—then froze when I heard a woman’s voice.
“Do you think he’ll like it?” she said.
Panic shot through me. Who was she? My mind jumped to the worst possible conclusion—that Tom was bringing another woman home. The lights flicked on, and everyone gasped.
Standing in the doorway was a young couple, both wide-eyed and just as shocked as we were. The woman held a suitcase, and the man clutched a set of keys.
“Who are you?” I demanded.
“Who are you?” the woman shot back, confused.
Jim stepped out from behind the counter. “We’re here for a surprise party. Who are you people?”
The man looked around. “We rented this place on Airbnb. We’re supposed to stay here for a few nights.”
I blinked. “Airbnb? This is our house!”
Dave frowned. “Wait—Tom must have listed it after you told him you’d be out of town.”
The woman turned red. “Oh my gosh, we had no idea. We’re so sorry. We’ll leave right away.”
“No, it’s okay,” I said quickly, trying to calm everyone down. “Let’s figure this out.”
The couple—Jake and Emily—stepped inside awkwardly as we tried to piece together what had happened. I turned to Karen and whispered, “What is going on?”
She looked just as stunned. “Tom must’ve rented it out when you said you’d be gone.”
I pulled out my phone and called him. “Hey, honey,” he answered cheerfully. “Aren’t you supposed to be on your flight?”
“Tom,” I said, my voice tight, “did you rent our house on Airbnb?”
He hesitated. “Uh… yeah. I thought it’d be nice to make some extra money while you were away.”
I closed my eyes. “Tom, I’m not away. I’m throwing you a surprise party. And right now, there’s a couple in our house who think they’re checking in for a stay.”
There was silence before he groaned. “Oh no. I’m so sorry, Maria. I had no idea.”
“Well,” I said, sighing, “you’d better get home. We’ll deal with this when you get here.”
After hanging up, I turned back to the group. “Tom’s on his way. We’ll sort this out when he gets here.”
Jake looked apologetic. “We don’t want to ruin your party. We’ll find another place.”
Lisa smiled. “No, don’t leave! We’ve got food, drinks—stay and join us.”
Emily looked uncertain. “Are you sure? We really don’t want to intrude.”
“Of course,” I said, laughing despite everything. “The more, the merrier.”
When Tom finally arrived, he looked sheepish but smiled as soon as he saw everyone. “I’m so sorry, everyone. I was just trying to save up for a vacation for Maria and me.”
Tom’s sister, Susan, burst out laughing. “Well, you definitely surprised us!”
Jake and Emily ended up staying for the party, and soon the room was filled with laughter and clinking glasses. Despite the chaos, the night turned out amazing.
