Dyson has never known life outside the shelter. He’s spent his whole life at the Humane Society of North Texas. The staff there adore him, but what Dyson truly needs is a family of his own.
He and his littermates were picked up as strays when they were just 4 months old. At first glance, Dyson looked like any other playful puppy. But rescuers soon realized something was wrong. He had been born with a rare genetic condition that affected both of his back legs, making it hard for him to move. After undergoing major surgery, his mobility was still limited, and walking normally remained a struggle.
“Dyson has been through so much — surgeries, pain, setbacks,” said Cassie Davidson, senior director of marketing, communications and public relations at the Humane Society of North Texas. “At one point, we feared he might lose one or even both of his legs.”
While Dyson was left behind, his siblings were all adopted quickly. Yet the shelter staff never gave up on him. They continued to cheer him on, advocate for him, and make sure he got the best care possible. Thanks to a generous donation from St. Francis Veterinary Clinic, Dyson was recently given a custom wheelchair that changed everything.
Now with his new wheels, Dyson can move freely and keep up with the world around him. All that’s missing is a forever family to share his joy.
“Dyson doesn’t realize he’s different,” Davidson said. “He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He just wants what every dog wants — love, companionship, and a place to call home.”
With the help of one of his favorite volunteers, Dyson has been practicing with his wheelchair and learning how to navigate with confidence. He’s eager to show off his progress to the people who will one day be his forever family.
“Maybe his family is closer than we think,” Davidson added with hope.
