New sorrowful information has emerged as parents confront a murder charge following the death of their 7-year-old child, who weighed 255 pounds.

Casper O’Brien
Casper O’Brien, age 7, passed away on November 4, 2025, following police intervention in response to a 911 call indicating a child in distress at the family residence in Flint Township. Recently, devastating new information has surfaced in this case.

The young boy was transported to the hospital but succumbed shortly after due to dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition leading to heart failure, with morbid obesity identified as a contributing factor. He stood at 4’2” and weighed 255 pounds.

As per the CDC, a child of Casper’s age and height would generally weigh between 50 and 73 pounds.

His parents, Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, face charges of second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture. They are currently being held without bond until their next court date on Thursday, July 2.

New reports suggest that Casper attained that weight in under two years prior to his death due to his parents providing him with a “consistent diet of snack foods.”

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton stated: “Clearly, the parents were improperly feeding the child, to put it mildly. He was not receiving the necessary nutrition,” as reported by the New York Post.

Authorities also suspect that the 7-year-old was nonverbal before his passing. He was reportedly bedridden, covered in bedsores and rashes.

“It’s an extremely sad and tragic situation. I’ve served as the prosecuting attorney for 22 years and believed I had seen it all, yet I’ve never encountered anything quite like this,” Leyton remarked.

“Extraordinary, terrible neglect”
The autopsy report, which included findings from law enforcement and Child Protective Services, indicated that the home was filled with trash, and Casper did not receive medical attention despite the family having health insurance.

Prosecutors claim Casper endured “extraordinary, terrible neglect.”

Leyton informed WJRT: “On the surface, this represents cruel and extreme suffering inflicted on this child due to the parents’ neglect,” according to VT.

“That is obesity. This child did not have a pediatrician and was only taken to the doctor, I believe… once.”

“None of these children even existed in the eyes of the government. CPS had never visited, and no one was aware of these children; they had not attended school.

“I can’t conceive of what else this is, other than extraordinary, terrible neglect. To me, that amounts to willful and wanton misconduct, which constitutes second-degree murder.”

A funeral tribute released following Casper’s death characterized him as a “bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit impacted everyone around him.”

“He enjoyed watching Super Monsters, especially his favorite character, Frankie Mash.

“He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Phoenix.”
