The ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’ Family Years Later: Separation, Claims, and Distance

Few reality TV families shone as brightly or fell apart as openly as this one, and what one of the children just revealed is about to reopen every old scar.

Jon and Kate Gosselin first welcomed cameras into their Pennsylvania home in 2007, building a loyal following around the chaos and appeal of raising twins and sextuplets under one roof. But behind the scenes, a storm was forming that the show never fully showed, and one of their sons is now putting it all into print.

From TLC Favorites to Tabloid Headlines

“Jon & Kate Plus 8” debuted on TLC in 2007 and quickly became one of the network’s major successes, transforming the Gosselin household into a ratings powerhouse.

The popularity led to books, media appearances, and public speaking opportunities, making Kate and Jon familiar faces nationwide. It was the kind of fame that appeared ideal from the outside.

Then 2009 came. Jon and Kate filed for divorce after ten years of marriage, with rumors of cheating circulating around both of them in the media.

The show was renamed “Kate Plus 8” and kept airing until 2017, with Kate leading it, who also participated in “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Celebrity Apprentice.” Jon, meanwhile, mostly stepped away from public attention.

In the years that followed, the custody arrangement became its own extended story. Kate received primary custody of the children, though two of the sextuplets, Collin and Hannah, eventually moved in with Jon full-time.

The reasons behind that change, particularly in Collin’s case, would later become the focus of serious and troubling accusations.

Jon Addresses the Past and Names Kate Directly

Jon finally spoke out in a 2019 appearance on “Dr. Oz,” where he discussed the personality issues that ended the marriage. When Dr. Oz asked him about the main personality problem, Jon did not hold back.

“Well, I think it’s both of us, but I think she has a narcissistic personality disorder,” Jon said. He elaborated:

“I think she tends to think more on her level, selfishly instead of for others. I think I tend to think sometimes more for others than for myself, so I tend to not worry what’s going on with me when I should sometimes.”

The show’s carefully produced episodes never allowed this kind of admission, so his words reframed years of televised tension in a very different light. The full interview made clear that for Jon, the decade of cameras had come at a real personal cost.

Jon Gosselin Finds Love Again and Walks Down the Aisle

Fortunately, Jon moved forward in his personal life in a way that surprised some fans. He and Stephanie Lebo met through mutual friends in 2021, and the two went Instagram official in 2024.

According to reports, she is a research and development chemist at AkzoNobel, a cosmetologist, and runs her own lash salon, Belle Cils Lash Bar. She also has a daughter, Giuliana, who is around 18 years old and lives with her and Jon.

On November 23, 2025, the couple married at The Barn at Silverstone in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in front of 180 guests.

Jon told his new bride, “Before I met you, I never knew what it was like to be able to look at someone and smile for no reason. I feel like the luckiest man in the world, because I get to grow old with my best friend and the love of my life.”

He also reflected on what Stephanie had brought out in him:

“She has shown me how to be sympathetic, because I was very non-sympathetic coming out of my divorce. She’s just made a better me.”

Only two of Jon Gosselin’s eight children attended: Hannah and Collin. His other six, the twins Cara and Madelyn and four of the sextuplets, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel, did not come, despite being invited.

Collin served as one of his father’s groomsmen and told Entertainment Tonight, “Looking at this moment and realizing how freeing this is for him and how much he deserves this and how much she deserves this, that’s something I won’t ever forget.”

Where All the Gosselin Kids Stand Today

The twins are now 25, and the sextuplets turned 22 this year, each carving out their own path with varying degrees of privacy.

Cara graduated from Fordham University in 2023 with dual majors in Mathematics and Economics and currently works as a Leasing Credit Officer at Bank of America on the Healthcare, Education, and Not-for-Profit team.

Her twin, Madelyn, also graduated in 2023, earning a B.A. in English textual studies and film and screen studies from Syracuse University with a minor in art history, and occasionally documents her life on TikTok.

Back in 2017, a teenage Mady had hinted at exactly this kind of creative future, saying, “I would love to perform in some way. And I feel like I could write some sort of memoir already.”

Regarding the sextuplets, Hannah launched her own vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand, Gosselin Girl Beauty, in May 2022, graduated from high school in June 2023, and is now studying business administration at the University of Miami.

Alexis, who declared at 12 that “I’m definitely going to work with animals someday,” has stayed largely out of the public eye. Aaden also lives privately off social media, occasionally appearing in Kate’s Instagram posts.

Leah documents bits of her life on TikTok, where she’s established herself as an avid reader, while Joel is an accounting student at UNC Charlotte set to graduate in 2027, actively involved in Beta Alpha Psi and Future Leaders of Accounting.

On Mother’s Day last year, Kate posted a birthday tribute to the sextuplets on Instagram that read, “And just like that, they turned 21! Happy Birthday to my 6! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ #GosselinSextuplets.” Six hearts. Six kids.

But unfortunately, there were two missing kids in the pictures: Hannah and Collin. Though the relationship between Kate and Hannah is reportedly not on bad terms, Collin and his mother are completely estranged for many reasons.

Collin Gosselin Is Done Staying Silent

Of all eight Gosselin children, it is Collin whose story carries the heaviest weight, and the one that is now spilling into public view in the most dramatic way possible.

Kate said as far back as 2017 that Collin had “educational and social challenges” and had enrolled him in a residential program to help him “learn the skills he needs to be the best him he can be.”

Collin tells a very different story about those years. He has alleged that Kate emotionally and physically abused him as a child, that he “never had a childhood,” and that despite living inside one of the most-watched shows on television, he grew up isolated and treated differently from his seven siblings.

Among his most disturbing allegations: that he was zip-tied at his hands and feet and locked in a specially built basement room containing only a bed and cameras, on multiple occasions.

He was 11 years old when Kate had him admitted to a mental health facility following diagnoses of behavioral and psychiatric conditions that he maintains he never had, and he has shared private medical records to support that claim.

Collin has also alleged that during his time at the facility, Kate “came to visit me once” for just 30 minutes. “The entire time all she did was lecture me and tell me that I destroyed our family,” he claimed.

In a 2022 interview, he reflected on what he believed drove the family apart:

“I want to believe it was because of TV and what being in the public eye does to a family. I think it tore us apart. It gave us less time to actually be together as a family, [and] more time to be in the public eye.”

From a Basement Room to a Marine Discharge

By 2024, Collin had attempted to enlist in the US Marines but was discharged before completing training.

“I was towards the end of training, very close to graduating. The paperwork was looked into, and they found out that I was, in fact, in an institution at one point in my life,” he explained in an ET interview. “And see, they don’t need any deeper reason. Being in an institution, that’s good enough for [them] to discharge [you].”

And the whole world will soon know more details of what happened to him… at least from his perspective. On June 17, 2026, Collin posted the cover of his upcoming memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight,” to Instagram, alongside a childhood photo of himself.

His caption read in part: “For a long time, I wasn’t sure I’d ever tell this story . . . For years, I kept those experiences to myself. Some because I was afraid. Some because I didn’t think anyone would believe me. And some because I just wasn’t ready . . . Writing this book forced me to revisit some of the hardest moments of my life, but it also gave me something I’ve been searching for for a long time: my voice.”

The book is set for release on October 13, 2026.

On June 27, a lengthy interview with Strange McKnights dropped, filmed before Collin had even announced the memoir, in which he went further than he ever has publicly.

He issued a direct challenge to Kate: “I would like to invite my mom to do a lie detector test. And that would be one of the questions, Mom, if you’re listening to this, um, we would ask about the zip ties . . . I want to get into everything.”

Collin continued, “And this is where we are both hooked up to lie detectors, heart monitors, everything . . . for so long she’s been putting on this facade to the media. I mean, even before TikTok, and for me, I have nothing to hide.”

A Memoir, a Challenge, and a Mother Who’s Reportedly Panicking

And although the book is still months away, that same day, Collin shared a headline on his Instagram Stories reporting that Kate was “spiraling” ahead of the memoir’s release, with sources saying she knows it’s about to hit the fan.

He blurred out his mother’s face with a filter and amplified a follower’s comment that read, “What’s done in darkness will always come to light.”

For now, the response Collin has received from fans has been one of overwhelming support. On Instagram, people wrote: “Proud of you for standing up for yourself and standing up for the truth. Always supporting the voices who are now loud – God bless you,” and “You grew into such a smart, handsome young man 😍🔥.”

Others added, “I am proud of you Collin! You seem like a very smart and kind young man!” and “You are so handsome! Keep elevating and stay true to yourself! Also check your TikTok dm.”

The Gosselin story was never really about eight kids and a camera crew. It was about what happens when a family’s most private moments become public property, and what gets left behind when the cameras finally go dark.

Now, with a memoir dropping in October and a lie detector challenge on the table, the most consequential chapter of this family’s story is probably just beginning.
