Place a Balloon Over Your Shower Drain and See the Surprising Result

Keeping cockroaches out of the bathroom can be difficult, especially when they sneak in through the shower drain. These pests love warm, damp environments, which makes bathroom pipes a perfect hiding place. Even if you clean regularly, cockroaches can still find ways inside. That’s why many homeowners look for simple tricks to stop them from entering. One surprisingly effective solution uses something most people already have at home: a regular party balloon.
Cockroaches often move through plumbing systems, using small openings to travel from one place to another. Because shower drains stay moist and warm, they frequently become an easy entry point. The balloon trick helps reduce the size of the drain opening, making it much harder for insects to crawl through.
Here’s how to try it.
First, remove the shower drain cover. Take a standard balloon and cut off both ends so that it forms a stretchy tube. Then slide this balloon tube over the drain cover so it fits tightly and creates a snug barrier.
After that, place the drain cover back into the drain.
The stretched balloon forms a tighter seal around the drain openings. Water can still flow through normally, but the smaller gaps make it much harder for cockroaches and other pests to squeeze through.
While the balloon trick can help, it works best when combined with a few basic prevention habits.
Keep your bathroom as dry as possible. Cockroaches are attracted to moisture, so wiping down wet surfaces and ventilating the room can make a big difference. Cleaning the drain area regularly also removes residue and odors that may attract insects.
It’s also important to check for cracks or gaps around pipes, tiles, or walls. Small openings around plumbing lines can allow pests to enter from behind walls or under floors. Sealing those gaps with caulk or sealant adds another layer of protection.
When used together with regular cleaning and maintenance, the balloon method can help reduce unwanted pests and keep your bathroom cleaner and more comfortable.
Sometimes the simplest household items can offer surprisingly practical solutions.
