New Report Claims These 20 Baby Names Are Going to Go Extinct This Year

A variety of influences shape how parents choose baby names. Pop culture, historical naming cycles, religion, and even travel experiences all play a role in what ends up on a birth certificate.

There is also what experts call the “100 year baby name rule,” the idea that names tend to resurface in popularity about once every century.

Choosing a baby name is deeply personal, but researchers continue to see clear patterns emerge over time. Some names surge back into fashion, while others fall so sharply in the rankings that they risk disappearing entirely.

BabyCenter recently analyzed naming data to identify which names in the top one thousand experienced the steepest drops between 2024 and 2025, and the results revealed several interesting shifts.

Their research found that names with unconventional or creative spellings are losing popularity. Place inspired names are also declining. Additionally, names that begin with the letters D or K, along with those ending in Y, are trending downward at the moment.

While many names appear to be fading, naming experts at Nameberry have also highlighted emerging trends expected to shape the coming year. In response to heavy global headlines, many parents are leaning toward names that feel imaginative, escapist, or inspired by storytelling worlds.

These rising trends include names rooted in ancient history, showgirl influenced choices inspired by the success of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, spiritually themed names with biblical connections, and polished “boomer era” classics like Nancy and Betsy making a return.

Fantasy literature is also playing a role, with romantasy inspired names gaining traction. Even unconventional picks that incorporate numbers, such as Rocky Thirteen, the son of Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, are influencing modern naming creativity.

There is also renewed interest in some of the most iconic works of British literature, which is fueling a revival of distinctly English names.

With novels like Wuthering Heights, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice finding fresh audiences, names such as Bram, Bronte, Celia, Darcy, Eyre, Fielding, and Tess are expected to inspire parents throughout the year.
