Academy Award nominee Rob Reiner, celebrated as a producer, director, and actor, and his wife Michele Reiner were discovered dead inside their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on Sunday. Authorities are treating the case as a homicide. Audio from a 911 call placed by a firefighter requesting additional support at the residence has since surfaced.

Rob Reiner was 78 years old, and Michele Reiner was 68. The couple was found Sunday afternoon, prompting the Los Angeles Police Department’s homicide division to open an investigation into what officials described as an apparent homicide.

A family representative issued a statement later that day, saying the family was devastated by the loss. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the statement read.

During a Sunday press briefing, LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton emphasized that the investigation is still in its earliest stages. He said there are no suspects at this time and confirmed that detectives plan to speak with as many family members as possible to determine what happened.

TMZ later released audio from a 911 dispatch call made around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, in which a firefighter requested backup to the Reiners’ Brentwood property after responding to the scene.

Rob Reiner was the son of the late comedy legend Carl Reiner and first gained national recognition in the 1970s for his role on the hit sitcom All in the Family. His acting career later included films such as Sleepless in Seattle, Primary Colors, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

While his acting was notable, Reiner’s greatest legacy came from behind the camera. He began directing in the 1980s and went on to create some of the most iconic films in modern cinema, including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. In 1993, A Few Good Men earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Emergency crews were seen gathered outside the Reiners’ home in Brentwood later that day as the investigation continued.

The Screen Actors Guild issued a tribute honoring Reiner’s impact on the industry. Union president Sean Astin described him as one of the most influential figures in film and television history, saying his contributions shaped American culture in lasting ways. Astin noted that audiences will continue revisiting Reiner’s unforgettable films and performances for generations.

Astin also shared condolences with the Reiner family, friends, and colleagues. He reflected on how Reiner’s work made him think deeply, feel strongly, and laugh without restraint, saying that is how he will always remember him.

Michele Reiner began her professional life as a photographer before moving into acting and film production. She worked closely with her husband and produced several of his projects, including Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released earlier this year.

She also earned an Emmy nomination for the documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which she produced and Rob Reiner directed.

The couple married in 1989 and had three children together, sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy. Rob Reiner was previously married to actress and director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and later adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner.
