Hospital patient who briefly died and was revived describes in detail what they witnessed during the unbelievable experience

The question of what occurs after death has fascinated humans for millennia. Some envision heaven and hell, others believe in reincarnation, and still others think death is simply a plunge into complete darkness and silence. Yet, some people have cheated death, briefly returning to life. On the online platform Reddit, one hospital patient who experienced this firsthand has shared what they witnessed during the near-death episode.
Traditionally, it was thought impossible to describe what happens after death. But with the advent of modern medical technology capable of restarting the heart, some individuals can survive moments of clinical death and recount their experiences. People report a wide range of experiences, and one Reddit user has offered a detailed account of their time in the space between life and death.
Reddit, a vast online community, allows users to ask questions, discuss topics, and share stories. One popular forum is “AMA,” short for “Ask Me Anything,” where users can pose questions to someone about their personal experiences. In this forum, a user named HumbleBumble77 shared that they had been on life support following a medical incident, had been pronounced dead for a few minutes, and remained on a mechanical ventilator for days before being revived.
The user wrote, “I have died, was revived, and was on life support for quite some time. I also work in healthcare. Needless to say, being on both sides of the spectrum (as a healthcare provider and patient survivor) after this incident has really heightened my perspective.”
The “Ask Me Anything” format allowed other users to inquire freely about the near-death experience. When asked what it felt like, HumbleBumble77 described it as humbling. They reported feeling no pain and being surprisingly comfortable, even though their body was struggling physically. They recalled episodes of vomiting while on the ventilator but insisted it did not hurt.
They also noted the comfort of feeling their family’s presence in the ICU. Even though they could hear conversations, they could not interact—a sensation reminiscent of an out-of-body experience. At one point, the user claimed to have seen someone who arguably could not have been physically present in the hospital room.
“Upon extubation—removing the ventilator from my lungs—I remember seeing my grandmother who passed away in 2004. She told me to ‘turn around… my time here is just beginning.’ Then I felt the tubes slide out of my lungs and heard the nurses calling my name,” they shared.
HumbleBumble77 described seeing their deceased grandmother as a deeply comforting moment. They felt “blessed” by the encounter, interpreting it as a sign that their time on Earth was not yet complete. They referred to their grandmother as their “genuine guardian angel” and admitted uncertainty about whether the vision was real or influenced by medication. Nevertheless, the experience offered reassurance and suggested the possibility of seeing loved ones who have passed.
The story drew amazement from other Reddit users, some describing it as “wild.” While some suggested that the experience could have been a hallucination caused by the brain or medications, others acknowledged the possibility that it was more than just a physiological effect.
One user shared a similar ICU experience, explaining the phenomenon from a medical perspective: “I was in the ICU after dying and being revived by bumbling EMTs. I hallucinated wildly, but none of it was real. I had no pain, just fear because I absolutely did not want to die. I remember everything—the code blue, the doctor telling me I was not going to die, and the nurse saying I was hallucinating due to the high doses of norepinephrine I was receiving. Nothing spiritual happened.”
These contrasting accounts illustrate the diverse interpretations of near-death experiences, ranging from physiological explanations to spiritual encounters.
