Former NFL star passes away at 41 shortly after disclosing serious health news.

Posted on October 28, 2025 By admin

NFL fans everywhere are grieving today. The football world has been hit with heartbreaking news that no one expected to hear so soon.

Only two weeks after he shared that he was fighting chronic kidney disease, former New York Jets star Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41. The Jets organization confirmed his death on October 26. Many who followed his remarkable career are struggling to take in the sudden loss of a player who was widely respected both on and off the field.

Diagnosed in 2006 and determined to keep going

Mangold, a native of Ohio, spent years battling a serious genetic kidney condition that he first learned about in 2006. He managed it quietly while continuing to excel in the NFL. Earlier this month, he chose to open up publicly about the reality of his health challenges. On October 14, he wrote an emotional message to both the New York Jets community and the Ohio State Buckeye family who had supported him since his college days.

He revealed that his condition had worsened over the summer and that he had begun dialysis while hoping to find a kidney donor. He explained that although doctors warned him long ago about this day, he expected to have more years before it became life threatening.

He shared that none of his family members were able to donate a kidney. For that reason, he reached out to fans and supporters, asking for help and encouraging people to learn about living organ donation. Despite the seriousness of his condition, he said he was doing his best to stay positive and believed he would return to stadiums again soon.

A football career rooted in determination

Mangold often told the story of how he became a center by chance. In seventh grade, his football team suddenly needed someone new to snap the ball after their center broke his hand. Mangold volunteered without hesitating, and that one moment would shape the next two decades of his life.

He went on to build a stunning college career at Ohio State, then became a first round draft pick of the New York Jets in 2006. He played all 11 of his NFL seasons with the team, becoming a core leader and fan favorite. Known for his personality and humor, he helped keep the locker room loose and energized. Former teammate Damien Woody remembered him as someone who could make anyone laugh even during tough times. He also spoke about Mangold’s generosity, loyalty, and the way he always put family first.

Success on the field and recognition that followed

Mangold’s performance was consistently strong. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections. He was named First Team All Pro in both 2009 and 2010, solidifying his reputation as one of the best centers of his era. In 2010, he signed a contract that made him the highest paid player at his position at that time.

After retiring in 2016, the Jets honored his legacy by inducting him into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2022. It was a moment that celebrated not only his athletic ability but also the positive impact he made on the franchise and the community.

Tributes from the Jets and across the league

Jets owner Woody Johnson released a heartfelt statement praising Mangold’s leadership and strength. He wrote that Mangold was not just a standout center but the core of the offensive line for many years. Johnson also noted how much players and staff adored him because of his humor, kindness, and unwavering loyalty.

Many former teammates and coaches have taken to social media to share memories of Mangold. They described him as a leader who led with integrity, always gave his best effort, and constantly encouraged others to be better.

A loved family man

Beyond football, Mangold was a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind his wife, Jenny, and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. Those who knew him personally say that family was always his top priority. His children often appeared with him at community events, charity fundraisers, and team ceremonies.

Football fans and former colleagues are now offering their prayers and condolences to the Mangold family as they face the tremendous loss of someone who brought strength, humor, and heart to every room he walked into.

A legacy that will not be forgotten

Nick Mangold’s influence stretches much further than the field where he built his career. He will be remembered as a fighter, a teammate who always lifted others up, and a man whose presence made teams feel united.

As fans continue to mourn, many are honoring his life by sharing personal stories, wearing his jersey, and thanking him for the unforgettable years he gave to the sport he loved.

The New York Jets and the entire football community have lost a leader, a legend, and a true friend.
