Texas Toast Sloppy Joes: The Perfect Recipe

Posted on September 1, 2025 By admin

This Texas Toast Sloppy Joe recipe takes the beloved classic and gives it a bold upgrade. Instead of the usual hamburger bun, the rich, tangy, and slightly sweet sloppy joe filling is piled onto thick, buttery garlic Texas toast, then topped with melted cheddar cheese. The result is a hearty, flavorful dish with the perfect crunch. It’s quick, satisfying, and ideal for busy weeknights or casual gatherings with friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • Ground beef – 2 lbs
  • Medium onion, finely diced – 1
  • Green bell pepper, diced – 1
  • Garlic, minced – 3 cloves
  • Ketchup – 1 cup
  • Tomato paste – ¼ cup
  • Brown sugar – ¼ cup
  • Worcestershire sauce – 2 tbsp
  • Yellow mustard – 1 tbsp
  • Paprika – 1 tsp
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Black pepper – ½ tsp
  • Texas toast slices – 8
  • Unsalted butter, softened – 4 tbsp
  • Garlic powder – 1 tsp
  • Shredded cheddar cheese – 2 cups
  • Optional garnish: fresh chopped parsley

Directions:

  1. Cook the Beef and Vegetables
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the beef as it browns, until the meat is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. Drain off excess fat.
  2. Make the Sauce
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Then add ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well, reduce the heat to low, and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes so the flavors blend together.
  3. Prepare the Texas Toast
While the beef mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the slices of Texas toast on a baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic powder. Spread the garlic butter evenly on both sides of each slice.
  4. Toast the Bread
Bake the bread for 5–6 minutes, flipping halfway through, until both sides are crisp and golden brown.
  5. Assemble the Sloppy Joes
Remove the toast from the oven and generously spoon the sloppy joe filling over each slice. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the meat.
  6. Melt the Cheese
Return the baking sheet to the oven for another 3–4 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve
Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot. These open-faced sloppy joes are crunchy, cheesy, and bursting with flavor — a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!
