MY CAT WON’T GO TO SLEEP WITHOUT OUR HANDSHAKE—BUT LAST NIGHT, SHE DIDN’T GIVE ME HER PAW

Posted on June 21, 2025June 21, 2025 By admin

I know this might sound strange, but it all began a few months ago.

Every night, right before I turned off the lights, my cat Mira would jump onto the couch and lie down next to me. I never taught her to do this—it just happened naturally. One evening, I jokingly held out my hand and said, “Good night, partner.”

To my surprise, she reached out her paw.

She touched my palm.

Then curled up and fell asleep.

At first, I thought it was a one-time thing. But the next night? Same routine. And the night after that, too.

It quickly became our nightly ritual, a quietly shared, adorable habit.

I’d say, “Ready for bed?”

She’d stretch out her paw to meet mine.

And just like that, it was bedtime.

It got to the point where I couldn’t fall asleep without it. If I forgot or got distracted, she’d look at me with those big, golden eyes, almost asking, “Where’s my handshake?” It made me smile, but I started wondering what had sparked this unusual routine.

Was it just a quirky habit, or was there something more behind it?

Then last night… everything changed.

I came home late from work, exhausted. Mira jumped onto the couch like always, but instead of reaching her paw out cheerfully, she curled up in the corner with her back to me. She didn’t even glance my way, which was odd. Mira usually made sure I knew she was there, even if she was resting.

I told myself maybe she was just tired or wanted some space. But as the night went on, she seemed restless—shifting around, softly meowing, but not in her usual playful way. It sounded more like a worried, low call.

I sat beside her, stroking her fur. “Mira, what’s wrong?” I whispered, though I didn’t expect an answer.

After a moment, she looked up at me—not just a quick glance, but a deep, searching look, like she was trying to say something important. It felt serious, different from our usual exchanges, and it gave me a small chill.

I gently offered my hand. “Ready for bed?” I asked, hoping to return to our routine.

But she didn’t offer her paw.

A wave of unease hit me. She had never missed our ritual before. It felt wrong. And I didn’t understand why.

I tried again, a bit more insistently. “Come on, Mira. You know what we do before bed.”

Still no response. She just lay there, staring at me with an unreadable expression. My heart started pounding, and I couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong.

As the night went on, Mira stayed near but wouldn’t settle. She paced, meowed anxiously, and tensed up.

I decided to try something different. I grabbed her favorite toy—the little feathered mouse she loved—and dangled it in front of her. “Look, Mira! Your mouse!” I said, hoping to distract her.

But she showed no interest. Instead, she stared out the window, ears flicking as if listening to something I couldn’t hear.

I grew worried. Was something outside bothering her? I checked—nothing unusual. The street was quiet. Yet Mira seemed to sense something I didn’t.

Then it struck me. Lately, there’d been a strange feeling in the air, a subtle unease I couldn’t explain. Even at work or with friends, things felt off—small frustrations, odd coincidences, unexplained breaks. Had I been ignoring something important?

That night, I couldn’t shake the feeling. Mira eventually settled next to me, but kept her distance, curling up at the foot of the bed without touching me. She was tense and still—nothing like her usual warm presence.

The next morning, I made an appointment with the vet, just to rule out any health problems. I needed to understand what was going on.

At the vet, I reflected on Mira’s strange behavior. Was it just a phase, or something more serious?

The vet soon called me in. “Mira is physically healthy,” she said. “But she’s showing signs of anxiety—quite severe, actually. It might be linked to environmental or emotional factors. Something in your life might have changed recently, and she’s reacting to it.”

I was stunned. “She’s always been so calm. What could have caused this?”

The vet smiled gently. “I’m not sure, but I recommend some calming treatments. Also, consider any recent changes in your routine or environment—it could be affecting her more than you realize.”

I nodded, overwhelmed. “Thank you. I’ll think about it.”

Back home, I looked around, searching for clues. Suddenly, the small annoyances I’d dismissed made sense. Work stress, frequent travel, tension in my relationship—I’d been burying these feelings.

Mira, my sensitive companion, had been picking up on my emotions all along. Her changed behavior wasn’t just about her—it was her way of trying to comfort me, maybe even warn me. She wasn’t just reacting to the outside world; she was responding to me.

Over the next days, I focused on relaxing and letting go of my stress. I spent more time playing with Mira, showing her things were okay. Slowly, she began returning to her old self—offering her paw before bed again, curling up close, purring softly.

Then one night, just as I was about to turn off the light, she did something new. Instead of a handshake, she reached out her paw for a hug.

A simple gesture that meant the world.

The truth is, we often forget how much our emotions impact those around us—especially our pets. They’re deeply connected to us, sensing our stress, worries, joys, and fears. Sometimes, all they want is for us to notice what’s changing inside ourselves. Taking care of our emotional health doesn’t just help us—it helps everyone in our lives, human and animal alike.

If your pet has ever taught you something important, share your story. Let’s remind each other to slow down, listen, and be aware of the signs all around us.
