I Discovered My Husband Owns a Secret Apartment

It all started when I stumbled upon a strange email on my husband Adam’s iPad. What I uncovered afterward shattered my world and made me question everything about our marriage.

Adam was away on a trip with our son and his brother, visiting their mom. While I was tidying the den, an email popped up addressed to him from an apartment complex — about shutting down the hot water for repairs. We own our home and haven’t rented anywhere in over a decade. That immediately raised red flags.

Adam was supposed to be in upstate New York, where there’s barely any cell service. I tried sending him a picture of the email, but it wouldn’t go through. When I finally reached him, the connection was spotty, and he brushed it off as a mistake — “They probably got the wrong email.” But how could they have his full name perfectly spelled if it was a mistake?

There were no other emails from that sender, and Adam is usually very strict about clearing his inbox. The apartment complex was only fifteen minutes from where he was supposed to be, but the email didn’t include any unit number.

I never had a reason to doubt Adam before, but this felt off. My gut was screaming something was wrong. I went over our recent interactions — he’d always been attentive, but lately, he seemed to spend more time with the boys alone and often made excuses to be out of the house.

The suspicion gnawed at me, but I wasn’t ready to face the truth. So I called my best friend Stacy for help. She posed as a delivery driver, called emergency maintenance, and got the apartment number. We drove over and knocked.

The door opened to a terrified 25-year-old woman who asked what we wanted. We introduced ourselves as delivery workers with a package for Adam and asked when he’d be there. Suddenly, two little kids, about five years old, appeared and stared at us silently.

From inside, we heard voices of at least three other women. The woman who answered the door shut it quickly and threatened to call the police when we knocked again.

I broke down in tears as we left. Stacy was shocked too. Outside, we saw the women and kids watching us through the window before quickly pulling the curtains.

Stacy’s voice trembled: “Jennifer, what was that? Who are these women? And those kids?”

I wiped my tears. “I have no idea. This is insane. How could Adam do this? We’ve been married six years and have kids. What is happening?”

“You should call a lawyer,” she said. But I wasn’t ready to believe Adam had done something wrong. Stacy put a hand on my shoulder: “We have to find out. Maybe there’s an explanation.”

“What explanation could make sense?” I asked bitterly. “Did you see how scared that woman was? And the kids…”

“Do you think he’s living a double life?” Stacy asked quietly.

“I don’t know what to think,” I admitted. “I trusted him completely. Now this… it feels like my world is falling apart.”

“We need to confront him,” Stacy said firmly. “You deserve to know the truth.”

“But he’s upstate, and I can barely reach him,” I said helplessly.

“Then we go to him,” Stacy declared. “We’ll drive up together. You need answers.”

Her determination gave me strength. “Okay. Let’s go. I can’t just sit here.”

When I arrived, Adam looked worried. “Jennifer, did you go to the apartment?” he asked.

“Yes,” I replied, voice shaking. “I saw everything. Who are those women? Who are those children?”

He sighed deeply. “We need to talk. There’s a lot I need to explain.”

“Explain?” I nearly shouted. “That you have another life? Other women and kids? How could you do this to me? To our family?”

His eyes were filled with sorrow. “I never wanted you to find out like this. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“Hurt me? You shattered my life. Ten years of marriage, two kids… Why? Just tell me why.”

He whispered, “I’ve always dreamed of a big family, with multiple wives. I knew it wasn’t accepted here, but I thought I could manage it without hurting anyone.”

I stared in disbelief. “You thought you could manage? You have other wives? Children? And never considered how it would affect me or our kids?”

“They’re not legally married to me,” he said. “But in my heart, they’re my wives. I take care of them and the children.”

It felt like a punch to the gut. “So you’ve been living a double life. Did you think I’d never find out?”

“I wasn’t thinking,” he admitted, tears welling. “I was selfish. I wanted you and the other life too. I thought I could keep it separate.”

“And you used company money to pay for all this,” I realized. “That’s how you hid it. No one saw a thing.”

“Yes,” he said quietly.

I shook my head, broken. “How do you expect me to stay? You lied to me, to our kids. You destroyed our family.”

“I know I made a terrible mistake,” he said, voice breaking. “But I love you. I don’t want to lose you.”

Tears streamed down my face. “You already have. I’m taking our son and going home.”

My mother-in-law and brother-in-law, who had overheard everything, were stunned and questioned him, but he couldn’t meet their eyes.

He didn’t try to stop me. He knew nothing could fix this. Driving away with our son, I felt a strange mix of sadness and relief.

The man I thought I knew was gone, replaced by a stranger with secrets I couldn’t forgive. I called a lawyer and filed for divorce with full custody of our children.
