We had always dreamed of expanding our family, but she couldn’t have children. So, it was just the three of us—her, me, and my amazing five-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, whom we both adored.
After months of thinking it over, we decided to take the big step and adopt. We wanted to give another child a safe, loving home.
On the day we visited the shelter, we spent about an hour talking with Mrs. Garcia, the director—a kind woman with gray hair and gentle eyes. After explaining the adoption process, she brought us to the playroom, where the children were laughing and playing.
We spent time with many of the kids, all wonderful in their own way. If we could, we would have taken them all home. But we were hoping for that one special connection.
While helping some children with a game, I felt a gentle tap on my back. I turned to see a little girl with a curious look.
“ARE YOU MY NEW DAD? I THINK YOU ARE.”
I froze. My wife looked like she might faint. The girl standing in front of me was the spitting image of my daughter, who was at home with the babysitter.
When she reached out her hand, I noticed a scar—identical to the one my daughter had.
My heart started pounding. I swallowed hard and, with a trembling voice, asked, “What’s your name?”
The girl smiled shyly and said sweetly, “My name is Angel.”
That name hit me like a bolt of lightning. My ex-wife, Lisa, had always wanted to name our next daughter Angel.
I quickly called Lisa, my heart racing as I waited for her to answer.
“David?” she said, sounding worried.
“Lisa, Emily and I are at an orphanage. There’s a little girl here who looks just like Sophia. She has the same birthmark. Lisa, can you explain this?”
There was a heavy silence, then a faint breath.
“David… I… I didn’t think you’d find out.”
When she finally told me the truth, my world shattered: she had been pregnant with twins when we separated. Feeling unable to raise two babies alone without support or money, she kept one and gave the other up for adoption.
“Angel is my daughter, Lisa. She deserves to be with her family.”
She sighed on the other end. “I understand. David, please take care of her. She deserves everything.”
Angel still held a puzzle piece when I hung up. I knelt beside her and took her small hand.
“Yes, Angel. I’m your dad.”
With tears in her eyes, my wife hugged her. “We’re so happy to have you.”
Angel laughed and hugged us both. “I knew it. I always knew.”
When we got home, Sophia was waiting at the door with her teddy bear. She was shocked when she saw Angel.
“Daddy, who is she?”
I knelt down beside them. “Hi Sophia, this is Angel… your twin sister.”
Sophia’s eyes sparkled as she ran to hug her sister. From then on, they were inseparable.
Five years later, our home is filled with love and joy. Our girls share secrets and dreams in a way only twins can.
That’s when I realized: love doesn’t just find a way—it creates magic. And this was ours.
