Barbra Streisand’s Dream Home Took Years to Secure — Now It’s Her Sanctuary with Husband James Brolin
Barbra Streisand first laid eyes on the home of her dreams while living nearby. She was immediately drawn to it but didn’t purchase it at the time—partly because her boyfriend disapproved, and partly because it was out of her financial reach. Still, the house stayed on her mind for years.
Today, Streisand and her husband, actor James Brolin, call that very place home. It’s where they recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary on July 1. Streisand marked the occasion on Instagram, sharing a sweet photo of the couple embracing and captioning it, “28 years today since we met honey… and 26 years today since we married! Love you. B ❤️.”
The pair live in the coastal home with their cherished Maltese poodles—Scarlet, Violet, and Fanny—whom Streisand regularly features in Instagram posts, especially on their birthdays.
A Long Road to the Dream
Streisand first saw the home back in 1984 while staying at her weekend ranch just down the road. She never truly felt at home on that property and was introduced to this coastal house by her real estate agent. Though the gray modern exterior didn’t initially appeal to her, the interior’s rustic charm captured her heart immediately.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t afford it then. Her manager advised her to sell the ranch before even considering buying another place. Adding to her hesitation, her boyfriend at the time felt the house was situated too close to a cliff.
Heartbroken, Streisand let it go—only to learn the house was sold to someone else and being renovated. “I was so forlorn,” she confessed. But her feelings never faded. She continued to live nearby and often passed by the home she longed for. The owners knew how much she loved it.
She even admitted to occasionally sneaking onto the property, climbing the fence just to see how the renovations were going and to indulge in her yearning for the home.
Later, she purchased the house next door, simply to be close. When the elderly couple who lived in the home between the one she wanted and the one she bought moved, she purchased their property as well—hoping to eventually merge the two into one large estate.
Her patience paid off. The couple who owned her dream house divorced, lowered the price, and Streisand was finally able to make the purchase in 1995. She said she was grateful the home already existed and didn’t require the stress of building from scratch.
Creating a Sanctuary
Since moving in nearly 30 years ago, Streisand has made the home her sanctuary. She once shared it with her dog Samantha, who has since passed, but now shares the space with her husband and their three adorable dogs.
The property spans three acres and features four separate structures: the main house she and Brolin live in, a barn, a mill house, and what she calls “Grandma’s house.” She also added streams to the landscape, explaining that water brings her peace. The barn even houses hens that lay green eggs—one of many charming touches across the property.
Outside the barn, a fish pond holds black-and-white fish, carefully chosen to complement the barn’s trim. For Streisand, the design of her home has always been deeply personal. She studied design books, took inspiration from her travels, and likened the process to filmmaking—seeing the final vision in her mind before making it reality.
The rose garden, which she considers a spiritual space, is another example of how the home reflects her inner peace and values.
A Home Full of Love and Legacy
Over the years, Streisand’s home has been more than a retreat—it has become the backdrop to some of her most cherished life moments. Most notably, her enduring marriage with James Brolin, which began shortly after they met in 1996. They married two years later in a ceremony held at their home.
At their wedding, Brolin gave a heartfelt speech: “Every night is a new adventure. Sleeping is a waste of time. I can’t wait to see her again in the morning.”
Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, their relationship flourished. Streisand reflected that lockdown brought them even closer: “We’ve literally fallen in love over this period of time.”
Now, with their children grown and starting families of their own, Streisand and Brolin are enjoying grandparenthood—welcoming their grandchildren into the same loving home that has meant so much to them.
After years of waiting and dreaming, Streisand now lives in a place that reflects her life, love, and legacy—a home built not just of walls and beams, but of heart and history.
