Massive flames consumed a nightclub in Kočani, North Macedonia, resulting in at least 60 concertgoers losing their lives and over 155 suffering burn injuries. The fire erupted at approximately 2:55 a.m. local time during a performance by the renowned hip-hop duo DNK. In the tragic incident, the band’s lead singer and four other members also perished when the fire caused the roof to collapse, sparking a deadly stampede.
Reports indicate that the singer, Andrej Gorgieski, initially left the venue as the fire started but courageously reentered to help rescue others. According to county interior minister Panche Toshkovski, pyrotechnic devices intended for lighting effects ignited the ceiling—constructed of highly flammable material—allowing the fire to rapidly spread throughout the discotheque and produce thick, choking smoke.
North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, described the loss of so many young lives as “irreparable” and urged all relevant authorities—including health services, police, and local government—to swiftly assist the injured and support the affected families. He called for unity, solidarity, humanity, and responsibility during this time of deep sorrow. Among the victims were also minors.
The country’s health minister confirmed that every available resource was being mobilized to save as many young lives as possible, while neighboring nations such as Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia extended their offers of assistance. Social media footage captured the moment the fire broke out, with the band heard urging patrons to evacuate the club, leaving the entire Balkan region in profound shock.
On social media, US Ambassador Angela Aggeler expressed her deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims and their families and wishing a speedy recovery for those injured. She underscored that the loss of so many young lives is a devastating blow to the community and affirmed that the full resources of the U.S. Embassy were available to support the Prime Minister and those affected.
